21st Century Centers

A Day in the Life of...Me.

  1. *"Group Work" provides students with more "real world" experience, because most of them will indeed be spending much of their working lives developing projects in groups.

  1. *Working in groups provides students with new insights and ways of thinking.

  1. *"Group Work" provides more of a sense of "shared purpose" in a class,  which means that students feel a greater sense of dedication to the material.

*Students get to work at their own pace and English Proficiency Level (ELP) because they each get an Ipod touch to work with.

  1. *As a teacher it allows you to differentiate among your students.

  1. *Teachers can target specific skills within each individual student in the group and the students won’t even notice that they are working on different activities.

* When working in centers all four domains of SIOP ( listening, speaking, reading and writing) can be incorporated in the day’s lesson.

                    About this idea:

The purpose of this page is to help those teachers, who like me want to help their students to meet the challenges of this modern era. We as teacher want to create a learning environment that inspires creativity, critical thinking collaboration and communication to prepare our students for the new futuristic workplaces. I have been an English as a Second Language teacher  for the past 11 years and searched for ideas on how  to turn my High School ESL classroom into centers for about ten of those 11 years. I have managed to set up my classroom into centers with the help of our technology supervisor ( Mrs. Poli) who to my luck has a vast amount of knowledge on how to run centers. I have six centers in my classroom where students Use apple ipod touch and a smart board to acquire new vocabulary, answer higher order thinking questions, negotiate on ideas, collaborate among team members and much more.

Why WORK IN Centers?
